What You Need To Know

Breasts

Making a decision about what to do with your breasts after a breast cancer diagnosis can be agonizing.

Talk with your doctor to help you make the right choice for you. If you have a mastectomy (removal of the breast), here are some breast options to consider:

Prosthesis

There are a variety of prosthetic breasts available. They are natural looking and are about the same weight as a normal breast. Special bras, and even swimsuits, are available to hold the prosthetic in place. They are made with prosthetic pockets on both sides, so you can use two prosthetic breasts if you have a double mastectomy or just one if you have a single mastectomy. Many insurance carriers cover the cost of mastectomy bras and prosthesis. Call your insurance company to find out what is covered and where you can get them.

Reconstruction

Some women choose to have breast reconstruction. A new breast mound can be created, however the reconstructed breast will not have sensation like a normal breast. An artificial nipple and areola can be made or in some cases, skin from a person’s real nipple and areola can be used in the reconstruction for appearance. The nipple, regardless of which method is used, will not have any sensation due to the mastectomy. The reconstruction process can begin at the time of mastectomy or at a later time. Talk to your doctor for more information.

Nothing

Some women choose to have a mastectomy and do nothing to replace the removed breast.
